Even if you’re an international hip-hop star, you’re still somebody’s child.
“When I was growing up I was really really close with my mother,” shared the Nickster. “I talk with her about everything that’s going on in life, and it’s still like that now.”
And while she calls her mother a buddy, to her elder sibling, the MC was of an annoying little sister.
“I had an older brother and he was quiet. He could sit in front of a TV and watch cartoons or play video games for hours but I could never sit for hours,” recalled Nicki. “I wanted attention so bad from my older brother that I would rather him hitting me or us fight than us not communicating. So I would do crazy things and I know, sooner or later, he’s gonna punch me. Then I’m going to fight him and then when I start crying I’ll go to my mother. It was chaotic but it was all love.”
Despite the brother-sister tussles, Nicki described her household as one of jokes and warmth.
“My mother is hilarious, she’s a Capricorn,” said Barbie. “She was always making me laugh so I get my sense of humor directly from my mother. To this day, me and my mother can’t be on the phone without busting out laughing at something.”
Still, Barbie says she keeps her mom away from the limelight so she isn’t too sure what she thinks of Nicki Minaj, the rapper.
“I don’t know, she doesn’t say much,” said Nicki of her mother’s take on her stardom. “It’s weird because half of this stuff she doesn’t even catch on TV because she’s like ’Oh no, I had to go to church’ and I’m like ’You couldn’t friggin watch my thing!’ But she was the one when I was at the verge of giving up that was there praying for me everyday. Her faith is unmatched, so I get that ’where there’s a will there’s a way’ from my mother.
“My mother never looks at anything like ’no,’ ” she continued. “I think she watched the last awards show I did, and she was like ’Wow, so you beat out Eminem and Drake?’ and it was like the People’s Champ award [at the B.E.T. Hip-Hop Awards] so she’s kinda in the groove of what’s going on but she’s not. I actually ask her not to buy the magazines, not to go on the Internet because I just want her to be mommy. I don’t want to explain Nicki Minaj to her. She doesn’t have to know who Nicki Minaj is.”
