Director Talks Willow Smith 'Whip My Hair' Video

By Vanessa Denis

Last night ( October 18), Willow Smith premiered her clip for “Whip My Hair” on BET's "106 & Park," and director Ray Kay shared his thoughts on the project.

“I think this video will be considered iconic in the future, Willow is definitely here to stay, she’s a superstar,” Kay told Rap-Up.

The music video begins with students seated in a plain white cafeteria, eating robotically in the same white hoodies and jeans. Shortly after, the daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith walks into the room with a boombox that's almost bigger than her. Turning on the radio, "Whip My Hair" blasts through the speakers and the boombox opens to reveal a paint stash, in which Willow dips her hair. Then it comes, the 9 year-old whips her braids back and forth with the painted tips spreading color and energy through the bland room. Thanks to Willow, the energy rises for those sad looking students in that lunchroom.

The video was set to premiere on BET and Vevo but came hours early on the Internet. We're guilty ... we watched. Following its debut last month, "Whip My Hair" and Willow have gained a pretty serious fan following.

A DJ even took it upon himself to nab an old Nicki Minaj verse and mash it with the pint-sized singer's hit. If an official remix ever comes,  we'd love to see fresh clip featuring Ms. Minaj.

Recently, Willow Smith was recruited by Jay-Z for his Roc Nation roster for his label Roc Nation.
