Last Friday (September 24) Kanye West delivered “So Appalled” the latest addition to his G.O.O.D. Friday series. The cut hit the net much earlier than usual (most cuts have arrived around midnight) and it features the likes of RZA, Jay-Z, Swizz Beatz, Pusha T and not so newcomer CyHi the Prynce. A snippet of "So Appalled" leaked earlier this year, making it one of Yeezy’s most anticipated records.
With every new Kanye leak, the tweets—and experts—are watching and weighing in on his star-studded collaborations.
“I love it,” says Planetill.com Editor-In-Chief Odell “Odeisel” Hall. “It lived up to my expectations for a number of reasons. Each rapper was distinct while staying in the vein of the central theme; they were appalled in their own ways about different elements. Easily the best G.O.O.D Friday song so far.”
“So Appalled,” along with every G.O.O.D. Friday leak, will not appear on Ye’s Dark Twisted Fantasy (formerly Good Ass Job) dropping November 15th. Instead, these joints are free music leading up to West’s fifth studio album.
“What got me excited about the New Kanye album in the first place was that he was going with more of that boom-bap,” says The Source Online Editor Kazeem Famuyide. “He recruited guys like RZA and Preemo on the beats and "So Appalled" is sounding like what I was promised. That song is already one of my favorite joints of the year, and if this is what he is leaving off his album, it’s going to be insanity!”
After less than one hour online, “So Appalled” became a trending topic on Twitter, as fans buzzed about the track the entire weekend.
One fan @RealMcFlyy tweeted “#NowPlaying ‘So Appalled’ For The Third Time!” shortly after it leaked" while @maceodkat retweeted Kanye’s post delivering the track and commented, “G.O.O.D. Fridays are gooder with some Ye.”
Last week's song offers a new breed of hip-hop that has been in the pipeline for awhile now, combining elements of synthy electro-rock with classic breaks. And it's no surprise that Kanye West is very pleased with his work.
"OK "So Appalled" might be my personal favorite G.O.O.D. Friday song so far,” Kanye tweeted. “It's just my favorite style of hip-hop done very modern.”
Another expert agrees.
“Kanye steered clear of the soulful vibe heard on several of the G.O.O.D. Friday releases and opted for more ominous instrumentation with touches of electro-rock,” says freelance writer and editor Georgette Cline. “The latter is Kanye’s way of embracing the natural shift in this generation's music. So many times there are debates where people say ‘That’s not hip-hop’ but hip-hop is still evolving—and this track is proof of that.”
ed. note: Sorry CyHi Da Prynce, you didn't fit in the Ps photo box. We still like your verse though!
