Anyone who thought hip-hop mayor Sean Carter developed his passion for Ace of Spade champagne after he dumped his unofficial sponsorship for Cristal was dead wrong. As fellow rap homey Rick Ross gears up to offer a “special” VMA performance, the Dade County boss reflected back on his first VMA Awards trip.
“My VMA experience, it was a couple years back. I had just released 'Every Day I'm Hustlin',” said Ross. “Had a cool year and I went. The first performance was Pharrell and Ludacris ‘Shake Your Money Maker.’ I wanna say that was three years ago. But I was actually sitting next to Jay. The whole time, we was in the auditorium, Jay had a little runner that was squatting behind the chairs bringing us Ace. So we was sipping champagne at the VMAs. It was dope. But at the same time, I was inspired. I was looking at the situation, realizing how much work I had to do. To first make it onstage. Then to make it to the level where Jay was, just sitting back enjoying it. Champagne running back and forth.”
According to Ross, the completion of his hop rise to super-stardom starts tomorrow night.
“Just to be a part of this year's VMAs in any capacity. I'm still humbled because I know it's so much more to do, so much more to accomplish, so much more bigger things. Just being at rehearsal, it was a reminder. Like I said, it was like I stepped ff a ship in Pandora. All white, the choreography, Chelsea Handler is on fire. It's dope.”
