There's no question that when Eminem announces a new video, the expectations are high. So when "Love the Way You Lie" premiered last night on MTV, we were ready for something major; and we definitely got it.
The video had some serious hype surrounding it, especially considering it starred Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan (not to mention Rihanna, who sang the hook) and delivered a powerful take on abusive relationships, pulled primarily from Em's own tumultuous experiences and amplified by the “Umbrella” star’s presence.
The narrative hooked us from the start, and by the end, we were debating whether it was Eminem's best video of all time. Now that's not an easy thing to declare, considering he's had quite a few winners over the years. So we went through the archives and pulled out our favorites. Check out our list below to find out which Eminem videos made the cut, vote for which one you think should be crowned #1.
The video for this The Marshall Mathers LP single tells the eerie story of an overly obsessive Eminem fan (played by Devon Sawa) who takes the rapper's lyrics too literal and writes to him repeatedly in hopes of creating a friendship, but never receives an answer. Eventually, the fan goes deeper into psychosis, and by the time Eminem (who plays himself and narrates the visual) finally responds, Stan has made headlines for driving off a cliff with his pregnant girlfriend in tow. The gripping story line combined with Sawa's spooky portrayal earns this Phil Atwell and Dr. Dre-directed video our top spot.
2. “Lose Yourself”
Eminem earned artistic credibility with this track and also in his starring role in the film the song accompanied, the semi bio pic "8 Mile." The video married the movie’s underdog ethos to Eminem’s blue collar background, striping away the rapper’s Slim Shady persona. The video was particularly stirring in retrospect, as the rapper later descended into drug dependency; this clip foreshadowed the pressure he was dealing with as a celebrity.
3. "The Real Slim Shady"
Eminem solidified his place as a mainstream icon with "The Real Slim Shady." While most of our favorite Eminem videos have been darker in nature, "The Real Slim Shady" was clearly one of his most lighthearted efforts and the clip most associated with his dominant peak. The video was set in a mental hospital (with Kathy Griffin as a nurse!) and had Eminem playing a variety of characters, from a nerdy reporter to Britney Spears. The whole thing mocked of pop culture, and we were definitely in on the joke.
4. "Love the Way You Lie"
Em's latest clip is as emotionally laded as anything he’s done in his career. Unlike "Stan," though, Eminem doesn't take an active role in the story line of his latest video; instead he lets Dominic Monaghan and Megan Fox do the heavy lifting; and they do a pretty great job. The video tells the story of a couple engaged in a destructive and abusive cycle. It's powerful because it's personal and the poignancy of everyone involved makes this one completely hit the mark.
Released in the midst of the War on Terror, the video for "Mosh" had Eminem jumping right into the political fray with it’s heavy anti-Bush sentiments. Unlike most of his other work, "Mosh" was completely animated and, yet, surprisingly provocative, earning it nearly 4 million hits on YouTube to date and rounding out our top 5 list.
