There are certain combinations that are simply made for each other and we just don't know it. Until someone, in this case, animator James Farr, makes that all important (and supremely obvious, but only after the fact) connection for us.
Like, say, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crossed with the Mario Bros. Okay, they both involved turtles, but how would that work exactly? After all, aren't the turtles that Mario usually deals with evil?
And that's precisely why "Teenage Mutant Ninja Koopas" is so brilliant.

It's the little touches, like Zero Suit Samus as the Statue of Liberty, holding a gold NES cartridge, or the Mousers painted like Yoshis, that truly sells the whole thing.
