Sony Is Surprised By The West’s Interest In Vita TV

Many eyebrows were raised when Sony introduced Vita TV last week. The idea of device that played Vita games on a TV, much like a console, seemed a bit weird at first.

But add in the fact that one could also play PSP, PSone, plus PSN games (don’t forget its ability to support the PS4 via Remote Play), as well as stream media, all for just a $99 price point, and you basically have something that goes head to head against the Ouya and Apple TV (and in many ways outshines them both).

Which is why news that it wasn’t coming to America was such a big blow to many. Something that took Sony completely off guard.

Eurogamer reports that the response in the West was much stronger than anticipated. Enough so that Sony may consider bringing it out here after all. According to Sony Japan’s Masayasu Ito:

“Of course we are thinking of launching it in the US and Europe. “But when it comes to the timing, we’ll have to watch the environment and identify what other services are available in the US and Europe and whether we’ll have to add other services.”

Given the recent rise in popularity of Apple TV (the device has been on the market for years, but only as of late has it gotten much buzz) and streamed content in general (Netflix made television history last night with all their Emmy wins), the environment seems pretty much ripe one might think.

As for why the Vita TV is being released in the East first, it’s because streaming content is not so big in Japan for whatever reason. According to Sony Computer Entertainment big wig Andrew House:

“The reason we wanted to launch PlayStation Vita TV in Japan first was because we think that there is a significant gap in this market even for a pure streamed TV box… There isn’t really a competitor here that’s staked out a claim. And frankly, in my own view, Japan is a little behind the adoption curve in video streaming services.

So we thought we could have an opportunity in Japan to really establish a leadership position by having an addition differentiated killer app – which is having our huge library of streaming games content.”

Apparently, the couple in the following video, watching a movie on the Vita TV, is a foreign concept? How strange:
