In "GTA V", there's a particularly rough and tumble part of Los Santos called the Hawick district. Which is, presumably, named after a real life town, located 40 or miles south of Rockstar North's Edinburgh, Scotland location.

Now, you'd think that they'd be at least amused to be given a nod by one of their neighbors, especially one who is responsible for one of the biggest video games of all time. Nope. Far from it.

The BBC reports that Hawick's local councillor, David Paterson, is afraid of the game damaging his hometown's rep:

"I am absolutely disgusted - there is a lot of history and a lot of good things happening in the town… We have got a lot of good things planned for this coming year… It is going to destroy the good reputation of the town."

Paterson's disgust is echoed by John Lamont, the town's Member of the Scottish Parliament. He had much worse to say:

"I, like many other Hawick residents, was shocked to hear that the name of the town had been used in Grand Theft Auto V. Not only is it a game which includes violence, sex and drugs, but the game's producers themselves describe the area of Hawick in the game as having a 'drug addict hipster vibe'."

Lamont has invited the game's producers to come visit Hawick and see for themselves "the mistake they have made."

Given the close proximity of the town to the studio, a visit is easily doable. Though one gets the hunch that everyone at Rockstar North has better things to do these days. Like… counting large sums of money for example.
