Wondering how the recently-announced PlayStation Vita lost some of the heft of the launch version of the Sony handheld? Well, it has to do with reverting from the brighter OLED screen to an LCD screen.
Talking with Nikkei's Tech On blog, Sony president Andrew House explained that the LCD hardware allowed them to lighten some of the load on the Vita hardware, which is 20% thinner and 15% lighter than the original model, according to our own Matt Hawkins.
House defends the move, saying that modern LCDs are much brighter than the ones used during the PSP era.
The PS Vita Slim will go on sale on October 10th in Japan, although no word has been given on when we can expect it here in the U.S.
