Moving Your 'Final Fantasy XIV' Account from PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4 Will Be Free, Says Square Enix

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

Square Enix announced today that current "Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn" players will be able to migrate their PlayStation 3 accounts to the up-coming PlayStation 4 free of charge.

"Players who have purchased the PlayStation 3 system version can transition their character data to the PlayStation 4 system to continue their online adventure," reads the company's press release, adding that players will not have to re-buy a PS4 copy of the game.

A beta for the PS4 version will launch on February 22, 2014, coinciding with the Japanese launch of Sony's recently-delayed next-generation console. The PS4 launches on November 15 -- just in time for Black Friday and Christmas -- in the U.S.

"A Realm Reborn" launched at the end of last month to a host of predictable technical problems that often accompany large-scale online games. During this morning's Sony press conference, Square Enix addressed the fledgling MMO's issues.

"Essential work to increase the number of servers and strengthen the service environment, with the aim of alleviating the crowding on existing servers, is also in progress," a spokesperson explained.

In somewhat tangentially-related news, Eurogamer ran a really great dispatch from Eorzea, the world of "A Realm Reborn," over the weekend. Read it here.
