Certain PlayStation 3 Games Can Be Easily, And Cheaply, Upgraded To Their PlayStation 4 Equivalents As Well

A little while ago we mentioned an initiative in which select Xbox 360 games could be easily upgraded to their Xbox One equivalents via GameStop. Since then it has been revealed that Amazon is doing the same thing.

Well, not surprisingly, Sony intends to do the same for PS3 owners who are planning on picking up PS4s. Though it might be a tad bit different than Xbox 360/One deals.

During Sony's Gamescom presser, Sony CEO Andrew House announced mentioned that those who picked up PS3 versions of certain PS4 games will be able to get the digital versions of the next gen version at a deep discount.

Activision, EA, Ubisoft, and Warner Brothers are the third party publishers who are on board, with Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, Watch Dogs, and Assassin's Creed 4 cited as eligible games.

There are no details as of yet, though it sounds considerably different then the upgrade path for Microsoft. For both GameStop and Amazon, you pay full price for the 360 version and then hand it back, along with $10, for the One version.

Whereas here, it sounds like you still hold onto your physical copy (or perhaps digital as well) of the PS3 game, which is detected by Sony, and thusly the option to nab the PSN version of same game for PS4 for dirt cheap become available.

In the end, you basically would get the keep the original and have two games, or something like that. Though this is purely speculation.
