Gotham Goes Online As 'Batman: Arkham Origins' Gets Multiplayer

WB Montreal has teamed up with developer Splash Damage (they've created maps for "Quake: Enemy Territory" and "Return to Castle Wolfenstein") to deliver three-team shooter/stealth multiplayer for October's "Arkham Origins." And it doesn't seem like a bad idea.

The 3 v 3 v 2 mode will be broken up between two 3-person gangs in the employ of either the Joker or Bane, and a third team comprised of Batman and Robin. Based on the trailer, it looks like Joker and Bane's gangs will employ the usual third-person shooter bag of tricks with capture and hold objectives, equipment, and good, old-fashioned shooting at each other. Batman and Robin will come in as spoilers, it seems, arriving to take the goons out using a mix of gadgets and stealth.

If we're going to get multiplayer in an "Arkham" game, I could imagine worse ways to go about it. I am curious about how (or if) it will retain the rhythm-based combat from the previous games in multiplayer--for me, one of the defining features of the series.

"Batman: Arkham Origins" will be out on October 25 for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.
