If there were ever a question that San Diego Comic-Con had ever evolved through its comic-book roots and into a full-fledged destination for all things nebulously "geeky" or "nerdy" or -- increasingly -- normal and widespread, let it be put to rest: "Lighting Returns: Final Fantasy XIII" has its own booth, with a new trailer and batch of screenshots to show for it.
This SDCC trailer covers, more or less, the same narrative ground as a similar trailer from E3: 500 years after the events of "Final Fantasy XIII-2," rose-maned protagonist has 13 days to save the world of Nova Chrysalia from some abstract malignancy called (of course) Chaos.
If my "Final Fantasy" lore serves me well, Lightning will spend at least part of her limited time fighting Noel Kriess from "XIII-2," though I'll admit that his self-described "ultimate sin" is lost on me. "Final Fantasy"'s trademark metaphysics are at work again, tirelessly striving to confuse people.
Nevertheless, the new trailer also offers pretty expansive look at Lightning's various costumes and customization options. If you look closely, you'll find a cat-eared Miqo'Te outfit from "Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn" (synergy!), but Cloud's SOLDIER uniform is curiously absent: it's a downloable bonus for anybody that pre-orders "Lightning Returns."
"Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy" will be available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in February.
