Fans of arguably the two best things airing on Cartoon Network at the moment, Adventure Time and Regular Show, take note: each are coming your way in the form of video games. And here’s the best part: both appear to have potential.
First there’s Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I DON’T KNOW!, a Diablo-esque dungeon crawler that stars all your Adventure Time buddies. Whereas the last game was a 2D side-scroller, this one is a 3D action RPG that sports over a 100 dungeons, plus a brand new storyline written by series creator Pendelton Ward.
Destructoid states that Ward is working quite closely the developer, WayForward, which published the last Adventure Time game, Hey Ice King! Why’d You Steal Our Garbage?! They’re also well aware of the somewhat tepid reception that their first one received, so lessons learned from that are being applied here. Presumably. Hopefully.
Next is the first game for Regular Show, entitled Regular Show: Mordecai and Rigby In 8-Bit Land. As one might be able to guess from the name alone, it’s about the two Regular Show regulars and how they’ve been sucked into their favorite games, which happens to bear more than a passing resemblance to various, old school NES classics.
It’s basically a mini-game collection, inspired by stuff like Super Mario Bros, Gradius, and similar fare. Sound things sound awesome, but given how tricky it is to present just one halfway decent game, something that promises several are always a tall order. As such, it may end up having to rely heavily upon the strength of the characters.
Thankfully, in that regard, Regular Show creator J. G. Quintel has also been tapped by WayForward (they’re making this game as well) to ensure that fans of the show at least are sufficiently entertained. And past episodes have demonstrated that Quintel knows a thing or two about video games, so thus far, positive vibes all around.
Both Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I DON’T KNOW! and Regular Show: Mordecai and Rigby In 8-Bit Land are due later this fall.
