'Ultra Street Fighter IV' Update Brings in New Characters and Balance Tweaks Next Year

Ultra Street Fighter IV

The annual Evo Championship Series fighting game tournament took place over the weekend, and Capcom took the opportunity to announce "Ultra Street Fighter IV," a new downloadable update that includes new modes, new stages, and new fighters.

"Ultra" is the third substantial upgrade to the original "Street Fighter IV," released in to 2009. In 2010, Capcom released "Super Street Fighter IV" as a stand-alone disc. Later that year, the downloadable "Arcade Edition" download re-balanced the game and added new characters.

"Ultra Street Fighter IV" will include five new characters. Elena, Rolento, Hugo (who already makes a cameo in the Metro City stage), and Poison have already been confirmed by Capcom, with a mystery fighter to be revealed later.

Hugo, Poison, and Rolento all have roots in Capcom's "Final Fight" series, while Elena made her debut as World Warrior in "Street Fighter Alpha 2."

The new DLC will also re-balance the entire game based on -- so Capcom says -- feedback from fans. According to the Capcom-Unity blog, Chun-Li, Balrog, and Dudley, and T-Hawk will be tweaked to offer them more offensive capabilities, though these are just "the top of the barrel" of the planned re-balancing efforts.

These tweaks and new characters will be available sometime next year for the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Like the "Arcade Edition" DLC, "Ultra" will come in two versions: a $15 digital add-on for people who already own "Super Street Fighter IV," or a brand new, $40 retail disc that includes the game and all previous DLC.
