Have Ubisoft And Fox Really Dated Their 'Assassin's Creed' Movie For May 2015? [Update With Confirmation From Ubisoft]

[Update: This morning, a Ubisoft rep confirmed that indeed, the May 22, 2015 date is correct, putting their "Assassin's Creed" movie square in the big budget summer blockbuster free-for-all]

I'm trying to find some independent verification (and I have a mail out to Ubisoft to confirm), but a lot of sites are reporting that the Michael Fassbender-starring "Assassin's Creed" will be holding on to the Memorial Day 2015 release date.

It all stems from a release date posted on Box Office Mojo, which alleges that the feature based on the bestselling Ubisoft franchise will be out on May 22, 2015. That would put the still director-less "Assassin's Creed" within range of J.J. Abrams' "Episode VII" and Joss Whedon's "The Avengers 2." Now "Avengers 2" has a confirmed release date of May 1, leaving the Marvel franchise the better part of the month to earn all of the world's money before another blockbuster comes along, but would Ubisoft want to launch its first independently-developed film so close to the Disney/Marvel 800-lb gorilla?

If the date is real, then we should start hearing something about a director for "Assassin's Creed" in the next couple of weeks. The project has be through a lengthy development cycle, reverting from Sony back to Ubisoft who decided they didn't want any more "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" situations for their game to movie adaptations: i.e. a movie that made its money that no one anywhere is especially happy about. To that end, they've enlisted "Prometheus" and "X-Men: First Class" star Michael Fassbender for the unannounced lead role (we don't yet know what time period "Assassin's Creed" will take place in) based on a screenplay by Michael Lesslie.
