Not content to fling the "Angry Birds" franchise at the web with the recently-launched animated series, developer Rovio has teamed up with Sony Pictures Entertainment for a feature-length animated film based on the mobile game for July 1, 2016.
Sony will be distributing the film, produced by "Despicable Me" producer John Cohen and "Iron Man 3" producer David Maisel and the studio is obviously very hot on the deal which gives them another 3D movie for their upcoming slate. Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal on the deal: "Every studio in town would love to add Angry Birds to their slate...We’re thrilled to be distributing this film and we hope this is just the beginning of what will be a long relationship with Rovio as we look for ways to work on future projects together.”
And what about you, the fans? Are you excited about an "Angry Birds" movie? What does that even look like? How do you justify 90 minutes or more based on characters who, for the most part, haven't had the burden of personalities or dialog for the length of their fictional existences? And the release is over three years off--will there be fans still clamoring for "Angry Birds" at that point?
