The creators of Cartoon Network’s “Adventure Time” don’t bury the series’ 8-bit inspirations too deep: it’s not uncommon for the series to play with the tropes of classic dungeon crawlers as animated hero Finn goes on whatever monster-slaying, treasure-hunting quest is set before him that week, set to a chiptune soundtrack. The season 5 episode “Mystery Dungeon” plays with these elements well, putting a mismatched group of the show’s side characters together for an unexpected, stupid journey.
Anyway, that’s all to say that D3 Publisher’s announcement of their second “Adventure Time” game is a welcome one. Instead of going handheld as they did with the “Zelda II”-like “Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why’d You Steal Our Garbage?!,” this fall’s “Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I DON’T KNOW!” will be headed to consoles and the PC.
According to the D3 announcement, the game will hit the Wii U, PS3, PC, the 3DS, and Xbox 360. As with last year’s 3DS game, Wayforward will be developing this one which will involve Finn, Jake, and friends exploring the Secret Royal Dungeon to save the Candy Kingdom. So this one’s going to have multiple playable characters along with four player co-op.
Wayforward’s also developing a 3DS game based on “Regular Show,” which will see animated groundskeepers/best friends Mordecai and Rigby trapped in their favorite video games. That one, “Regular Show: Mordecai and Rigby In 8-Bit Land” will be out this fall alongside “Ben 10 Omniverse 2.”
