New Twitch App Brings Game Streams To Xbox 360

Gamers who aren't in the mood to game now have an easier way to sit back, relax and watch other people play games. Announced today, a new dedicated app brings the popular streaming platform Twitch right to the Xbox 360 and our big screen TVs.

"Our app for Xbox 360 brings Twitch video to the television and into the living room of millions of Xbox Live members for the first time," said Emmett Shear, Twitch CEO. "The app will let every Xbox Live gamer find and watch streams of their favorite games from their couch! Given the huge number Xbox owners and how many of them love gaming spectatorship, it's a natural fit to bring the Twitch experience to the 360."

More than 800,000 people stream live gameplay via Twitch, and approximately 34 million people tune in each month to watch the virtual action unfold. The Twitch app on Xbox 360 will let Xbox Live Gold subscribers tune in to 3000 of the most popular streams on their big screen. Curated streams, tournaments and shows will be featured, with users able to browse other streams by game or popularity.

"We're very excited to create more amazing Xbox 360 experiences. Twitch brings a whole new category of live gaming video content that Xbox 360 owners will love. Now you can get your fill of playing a game, then stay right there on Xbox Live and continue the experience by watching the world play," said Martin Sacchi, General Manager, Content Acquisition at Xbox.

With the new app in place on Xbox 360, it's no surprise that Microsoft is also planning a special live event through the service following the May 21st Xbox Reveal event, which is only a week away. The follow-up stream will begin at 3pm ET with Major Nelson on hand to moderate.
