The resurrected early 90's comics line (which we've been covering a bit over on the Geek side) has a big, summer event planned and have enlisted developer Storm City Entertainment to build an episodic, 8-bit style sidescroller for iOS and Android to tell the story of a nanite-powered government assassin, psychics, and the big old bloody dust-up between them in "Harbinger Wars: Battle for Las Vegas."
On the comics side, the four-issue "Harbinger Wars" kicks off on April 3 with the first issue of the miniseries launching alongside the first free level of the game (the story will also be supported in the ongoing books "Harbinger" and "Bloodshot"). The story follows "nanite-enhanced commando Bloodshot or teenage telekinetic Peter Stanchek as they fight their way out of a classified Project Rising Spirit compound and into a psiot-occupied casino on the Vegas strip." Subsequent updates for the game will be released alongside new issues of the miniseries, based on the main story written by Valiant's Joshua Dysart and Duane Swierczynski (Clayton Henry is providing art for the series).
From the official solicitation for the miniseries:
HARBINGER WARS, Valiant’s first family crossover event, begins here! A decades-old secret is about to put BLOODSHOT and HARBINGER on an inescapable collision course – and, soon, the most powerful forces in the Valiant Universe will be drawn into a battle without sides, without rules, and without mercy.
•Two dozen undisciplined, untested and untrained superhuman children have just escaped from a top-secret research facility and into the world.
•When Bloodshot, Toyo Harada and Peter Stanchek join the chase, will the Valiant Universe be ready for its first all-out superhuman showdown?
•Start reading here for a high-stakes tale that will put Valiant’s greatest heroes to the ultimate test!
If you're inclined to spend money in the game, there will be weapons to buy along with new characters ("Harbinger" baddie Toyo Harada will be one of the characters who you can grab via in-app purchase).
This isn't the first time the Valiant universe has been seen in video games: back when they were owned by Acclaim, we got a pretty excellent shooter out of them based on "Turok: Dinosaur Hunter" as well as games based on "Shadowman" and an "Iron Man"/"X-O Manowar" team-up.
To tie into the game release, all five of the publisher's June comic releases will have 8-bit covers from artist Matthew Waite. The alternate covers will be for "X-O Manowar" #14 (which will still be in the middle of its own event, "Planet Death"), "Harbinger" #13, "Bloodshot" #12, "Archer & Armstrong" #10 and "Shadowman" #7.
