New Video Game Releases For The Week Of 3/5: Surviving The Game, Starring Ice-T

The first really packed week of 2013 sees “Tomb Raider” getting the reboot treatment, MercurySteam bridging their first and last “Castlevania” games, “SimCity” coming back in a big way, and Bioware bidding Shepherd farewell in the last “Mass Effect 3 DLC.”

Don’t complain that you’re bored, there’s plenty to do.

Title:Tomb Raider
Platform(s): PC, Xbox 360, PS3

I like the new “Tomb Raider”–I really like it, even though it has a few qualities that make it an odd fit for the title “Tomb Raider.” Crystal Dynamics’ reinvention of the series relies heavily on violence done upon its heroine, but somehow, the developer was able to find a way to strike a balance between exploitative (there’s a glancing moment of the threat of sexual violence) and empowering (but most everything else revolves around surviving the island and its crazed inhabitants).

Get the PC version because I hear it’s got fly hair tech.

Title:Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate
Platform(s): 3DS

I’m a little more mixed “Castlevania: Los – MoF,” the bridging chapter between 2010’s “Lords of Shadow” and its upcoming console follow-up. While it offers some interesting narrative threads for the cursed Belmont clan, it’s hard to escape the expectations of a 2D “Castlevania” post-“Symphony of the Night.” That’s not to say it’s bad, it just offers a game that’s lighter on the exploration than you expected.

Platform(s): PC

My Twitter feed was packed with tons of you having trouble getting this loaded via Origin last night. As I understand it, EA’s return to “SimCity” has a lot of great hooks in it for new and old players–if you can get past the barrier to entry of installing it.

Title:The Showdown Effect
Platform(s): PC

Title: “Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations 3″
Platform(s): Xbox 360, PS3

Title:Naruto: Powerful Shippuden
Platform(s): 3DS

Title:Mass Effect 3” – “Citadel”
Platform(s): PC, PS3, Xbox 360

Title:Battlefield 3” – “End Game”
Platform(s): PC, PS3, Xbox 360

Title:DMC” – “Vergil’s Downfall”
Platform(s): Xbox 360, PC, PS3

Both “Battlefield 3″ and “Mass Effect 3″ are saying goodbye to new DLC releases with their latest updates as they look forward to what’s next in their respective series. We already know followups are in the works for both, so this is really just a chance to spend some quality time with a pair of wildly different EA franchises. DICE should be singled out for stellar post-release support of their shooter while BioWare has done their best to smooth out the rough edges of the “ME 3″ campaign to varying degrees of success.
