ECCC 2013: Dark Horse Comics To Release 'Mass Effect: Foundation' Ongoing

The upcoming series will be based on the March 5 "Citadel" DLC for "Mass Effect 3," Dark Horse announced this weekend during the Emerald City Comic-Con.

"Mass Effect 2" and "3" lead writer Mac Walters will be handling story chores starting in July with Omar Francia handling art. Walters has written four other miniseries set in the "Mass Effect" universe (the four-issue "Homeworlds" was the most recent), so at this point, he's an old hand at bringing the games into comics.

In the release, Dark Horse wouldn't provide any details about the story, or how it will tie into the Citadel DLC, but in an interview with Comic Book Resources, Walters said that "Foundation" would elaborate on some stories hinted at throughout the games:

When we started talking about what we could do in the future, we said, "Well, obviously, something that's character-based could work." Rather than going into an area where we tell brand-new stories in a universe that people know already, maybe we could find ways of fleshing out some of the stories that we've heard hints of already. At a high level, that's where we thought about going with "Foundations" and that's where we went with it.

The unnamed protagonist of the book is female, although we don't yet know her name or what, if any, of the "Mass Effect" supporting cast will be making appearances in the July 24 release.
