2011's "Anomaly Warzone Earth" (and its subsequent Xbox LIVE port) wasn't half-bad, refreshing the tower defense genre by making you the one smashing the towers. Now developer 11 Bit Studios is announcing that a sequel, "Anomaly 2" is on the way to the PC, Mac, and Linux sometime in the second quarter of this year.
The developer rolled out the sequel to fans of the first game in a clever way, offering a mystery game for half-off two weeks ago, before revealing today that it would be "Anomaly 2" (which will be priced at $14.99. The sequel mixes things up a bit with the human survivors of the alien invasion banding together to use vehicle/mech hybrids to repel the extraterrestrial threat. Plus, the new mulitplayer mode will allow two players to mix it up as both the aliens in their towers and the humans with their mobile infantry.
And here's what the developer has to say about it:
In the years following the invasion of Earth in 2018, the planet is overrun by alien machines. Humankind is on the verge of extinction. Banded together in huge convoys, they search the frozen tundra for food and supplies. Since the war, the roles have been reversed: now our species seems to be the Anomaly on a machine-controlled planet. Your convoy, Commander, is called Yukon.
Even if the fiction of the first game was a slog to get through (ditto the voice acting), the core gameplay was pretty terrific. And with the changes outlined here, I'm curious about what else 11 bit has in store for the sequel.
