New ‘Spelunky’ DLC Adds New Characters and Deathmatch Maps

By Joseph Leray

One of the unfortunate side effects of Sony’s PlayStation 4 announcement is that it dominated games coverage for almost an entire week. Into that cavernous maw fell Derek Yu’s surprise announcement that two sets of downloadable content for “Spelunky” are now available on the Xbox Live Marketplace.

The “Explorers” DLC adds eight new spelunkers -- the Eskimo, the Robot, the Viking, the Round Girl, the Round Boy, the Cyclops, the Ninja, and the Golden Monk -- to the game’s red-nosed cast. These can be used in both Adventure and Deathmatch modes.

Speaking of Deathmatch, the “Spelunky: Arenas” pack adds a whopping 24 new maps for friends to kill each other in.

We’re several months removed from the game’s Xbox Live Arcade debut in July, but dedicated players can snag each pack for 160 Microsoft Points. And surely there are still people playing “Spelunky”: it was one of our Best Xbox 360 Games of 2012.
