Nintendo And Namco Bandai Team For New ‘Mario Kart’ Arcade Game

Arcades may not be as popular as they once were, but that doesn’t mean Nintendo has forgotten about them. Teaming up with Namco Bandai, the publishers are working together to create a new Mario Kart game, titled “Mario Kart Arcade GP DX.” Headed to Japanese arcades later this year, the game will make its debut at the Japan Amusement Expo.

The arcade game doesn’t see to be all that different from other Mario Kart games. However, it does include some of the franchises more recent ideas, including the underwater racing and gliders that we first saw in Mario Kart 7 for the 3DS. With the help of Google Translate, we’ve been able to determine that the game will include a single-player Grand Prix, four-player Battle Mode, a co-op team racing mode and an “Alter Ego” mode where you would perhaps race against the ghost of another player on the leaderboards.

Being a longtime fan of Mario Kart, it’s a little disappointing to see a Mario Kart arcade cabinet that I will probably never get a chance to play. On the upside, there’s the slightest little chance that this could be an early look at Mario Kart on Wii U. Considering they’re hard at work on Super Smash Bros for Wii U and this arcade game for Japan, is it possible Namco Bandai is working on Mario Kart for Wii U as well? It won’t be much longer until we find out. Nintendo has said that the latest Mario Kart will be playable at E3 2013 in June.
