‘Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker’ HD Remake Announced, Wii U Zelda Will ‘Take Some Time’

This morning’s Wii U-focused Nintendo Direct presentation (after the break!) confirmed that not one, but two Legend of Zelda games are headed to Nintendo’s latest console. The first one we’ll see is an updated, HD version of GameCube classic “The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker.”

Though Nintendo hasn’t decided on an official title, the Wind Waker HD remake will bring improvements to graphics and gameplay overall. It will also give gamers the ability to play solely on the Wii U GamePad, leaving the TV open for other members of the household. Nintendo says Wind Waker HD will be available by Fall 2013.

Details on the all-new Zelda game headed to Wii U are a bit more scarce, but producer Eiji Aonuma said their mission is to “rethink the conventions of Zelda,” addressing things like players having to complete dungeons in a specific order and making players play the game by themselves. Apparently, the team tried address some these issues in Skyward Sword, but was not able to. No specifics as to what changes are in store were revealed, but Aonuma says there will be more to talk about as the game’s development progresses.

Something I personally would love to see in a new Zelda game would be co-op. It’s been attempted in previous Zelda games such as Four Swords, and getting together friends to solve the puzzles and mysteries of Zelda’s dungeons could make for some very entertaining gameplay in HD. Also, traversing an expansive open world on horseback, entering dungeons and other areas as you please, while friends followed close behind, could be pretty interesting. For now, we’ll have to wait to see what Nintendo has planned for Link and the kingdom of Hyrule.
