Kid Cudi Joins The Cast Of 'Need For Speed' Film

The rapper will be joining "Breaking Bad" star Aaron Paul's pit crew for the revenge-themed film based on the EA games series.

Cudi--real name Scott Mescudi--is one of four new actors announced as part of the 2014 release from director Scott Waugh (he co-directed the big screen military recruiting video "Act of Valor"). Alongside Cudi, Ramon Rodriguez, Rami Malek and Harrison Gilbertson will be joining the cast in a story that sees Aaron Paul's character joining a cross-country race to get revenge on the person who framed him for murder.

According to this THR piece, the goal with "Need For Speed" is to emulate the car culture films of the 1970's. If they namecheck "Vanishing Point" (and I feel like it's only a matter of time before someone associated with the movie namechecks "Vanishing Point"), then it's likely they've missed how much those 70's movies were about outsiders, loners, and non-conformists clashing against society via the road. From the sounds of this, it's more a straight-up thriller, likely with some car porn thrown in.

I might also be cranky since it's early in the A.M. as I write this, but the "Need For Speed" games have never provided any kind of intentionally enjoyable fiction, and outside of Paul's involvement, I'm having trouble seeing what the appeal is here.

In any event, "Need For Speed" has a targeted release date of February 7, 2014.
