App Of The Week: 'Grand Theft Auto: Vice City'

Gamers can return to the glitz and glamor of Vice City today, as Rockstar Games and War Drum Studios have just released "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" on iOS. The mobile version celebrates the game's 10 year anniversary, bringing with it updated graphics and character models.

Vice City is the follow-up to 2002's "Grand Theft Auto III" and many gamers consider it to be one of the greatest games in the franchise, something I'm not so quick to argue.

"Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is everything we loved about the 80's packed into a sprawling open world action game," said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. "We're thrilled to let mobile and tablet players experience everything Vice City has to offer."

I've had a little bit of time to try the game out myself, and I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. When first considering the notion of playing a game like this with touch controls, I was a little skeptical. Thankfully, everything works really smoothly and there are even some customization options. On top of that, a new targeting system has been introduced that makes slaying the competition a bit easier with touchscreen controls.

The world looks better than I remember (thanks to updated visuals) and all of the interesting characters are back to really give Vice City the sleazy underworld vibe that made it so entertaining when it was first released.

One of the best new features (and something we only dreamed of when Vice City first came out) is the ability to create custom playlists. On iOS, all users have to do is create an iTunes playlist titled “VICECITY” and they can queue it up on in-game radio. Listening to all of the 80's inspired tunes is great, but once in a while it's nice to listen to bands you actually like.

Whether you've played the game before, or just want to see what you missed all those years ago, Vice City is definitely worth adding to your recent downloads. You can pick it up for iPhone and iPad via the App Store for a cool $5.
