Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime Stays Positive Amid Wii U Criticisms

Satoru Iwata recently apologized for the mandatory update that surprised Wii U owners on launch day, but Fils-Aime is taking a slightly different approach, saying the 1GB update was required to provide Nintendo consumers with the “very best product” possible.

"Nintendo developers want to make sure that the very best product is available to consumers," Fils-Aime told Gamasutra. "That creates a dynamic where our developers are working on elements until the very last point possible. That's why the system update was required on Day One - and this is quite similar to what's happened with other consumer electronic products."

Thankfully, Fils-Aime added that the update will be incorporated into the console's firmware sometime in 2013, meaning customers will no longer have to deal with bothersome download. He also commented on some of the less-than-stellar reviews, noting that many consumers seem to be having a great time with their recent purchase.

"Reviews of a system or review of a game really come down to the quality and capability of the reviewer," he said. "There has been a range of comments and commentary. But when I go on Miiverse and see how consumers are reacting to games like ZombiU or … Call of Duty, that tells me we're doing something very, very positive. Similarly, when I go on other consumer social networks and see other consumer reaction that is positive, I know we've done well."

Wii U's Miiverse also ran into some issues on launch day, but Fils-Aime is confident that this will no longer be an issue leading up to the holidays. He didn't reveal the exact cause of the initial connectivity problems, but stated that "those servers will not be challenged in the same way."
