New Trailer Introduces the Wide World of Etrian Odyssey IV

By Joseph Leray

Etrian Odyssey, Atlus’ long-running roguelike dungeon crawling series, seems like the type of game I should like: I love party-based job systems, and its signature map-making mechanics trace back to pen-and-paper role-playing games. It’s too bad that its reputation for wicked difficulty – and the fact that I don’t have a spare 100 hours lying around — has always scared me off.

Nevertheless, Atlus has released a new trailer for Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan, introducing the world of Tharsis and the mechanics that will get you through its vast underground labyrinths. Intrepid cartographers will need to make use of the old school, first-person turn-based combat to stay alive long enough to plum the depths of the uncharted Yggdrasil Tree.

More interesting, though, is that Legends of the Titan uses the 3DS’ StreetPass functionality to trade characters. Like in past games, you’ll be able to keep five explorers in your party, with a stable of ready adventurers stashed in your guildhall. Now, though, your character roster will include those created by friends and passersby alike.
