App of the Week: ‘Borderlands Legends’

Borderlands” and “Borderlands 2” have both seen success on consoles and now publisher 2K Games and developer 2K China are hoping for the same results on iOS. “Borderlands Legends” hit the App App Store for iPhone and iPad just yesterday, bringing characters from the first game in the series back for an arena-style, top-down shooter.

Unlike the console versions of Borderlands, the “Borderlands Legends” spin-off throws players into a mission-based, top-down arena version of Pandora. The first game’s characters – Mordecai, Lilith, Brick and Roland – have returned to the front line, ready to take on hordes of oncoming baddies while collecting cash and purchasing new weapons. As players progress their characters will earn experience and level up, which unlocks new skills and abilities. Each character has a unique set of abilities that players will have to use wisely in order to survive the coming onslaught.

Players control all four characters at the same time. As enemies enter the arena you’ll have to position your team according to what kind of range they have with their different weapons – this is indicated by a ring around each character. Mordecai, for instance, uses a sniper rifle that can shoot pretty darn far. Brick, on the other hand, will need to get right up in the action to lay the smack down.

“Borderlands Legends” doesn’t provide the full blown experience “Borderlands 2″ delivers on consoles, but the game makes great use of the tablet platform was built for. If you’re a fan of the series it’s definitely worth take a looking at. For $4.99 you can head back to Pandora on iPhone, while iPad users are stuck paying $6.99 for the “HD” version
