We’ve got one of the year’s bigger games out this week (literally, Assassin’s Creed III can only appropriately be called “sprawling”) while Criterion makes another go at open world racing games. Plus: puzzles! Plus (also): dinosaurs! You East Coast folks stay safe (you know, on the offhand chance you’re reading this right now).
Title: Assassin’s Creed III

Assassin’s Creed III is a huge game–big in a way that I suspect will go in both the credit and debit columns when looking at the final product. Case in point: I’m been at it for about 10 hours and I’m only maybe a quarter to a third of the way through–and that’s without venturing too far off the story path. More than anything else, Ubisoft should be commended for the size and scope of their vision here, but it might be the fine details that mar the overall experience for me. As far as it goes, ACIII feels familiar, but then very different. Case in point: rooftops: you may be spending less time on them than in the past and that makes for a very different experience from the start.
We’ll see–I still have around 75% to go before I will feel comfortable making up my mind. And don’t forget, there’s the Vita-exclusive Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation out today, too should you feel inclined to continue delving into this time period with a first for the series: a female Assassin.
Title: Need For Speed: Most Wanted

I only just got this in the mail yesterday, so you can imagine I’ve had less than a couple of hours to mess around with it. First impressions: welcome back to Paradise City–er, Fairfield. Also: the handling is a little less arcade-y than previous Criterion titles (but it’s still identifiably one of their games).
Let’s see how the multiplayer and navigating the city hold up and I’ll get back to you.
Title: Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask
“What’s that? Another spot of mind-bending puzzling? (Sigh) Well let me just finish my tea first. The tea is the puzzle, you say? Diabolical.”
Title: Okami HD
Capcom’s given a visual spit shine to the artful action adventure game and thrown in Move support as well. For the Okami faithful who’ve already picked it up on the PS2 and the Wii–it’s pretty much taken for granted that you’ll get this iteration as well. However, there’s a segment of the audience who have yet to play Okami and while I don’t know if (wholly optional) Move controls are the best introduction, its visual upgrade is worth seeking out.
Title: Primal Carnage
Developer Lukewarm Media brings you this class-based humans vs. dinosaurs shooter and conceptually, I’m all over it. With five human and five dinosaur types fighting it out in what look like the ruins of Jurassic Park, this should, for all intents and purposes be the game my inner six-year-old should be most excited about this week. But a poor showing at PAX left a bad impression, and between the lethargic controls on the dinosaur side and a map that felt both oppressively empty and hard to navigate, Primal Carnage felt (at the time) like a title that needed to bake a little longer.
