DC Comics features some of the most recognizable superheroes that have ever been created. Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman are just a couple of the characters that have become household names over their decades old existences. The DC characters have saved numerous worlds, countless times, even if they have to do it with force, but who ever said saving earth would be easy? You have to break a few eggs to make an omelet. The thing is, in Injustice: Gods Among Us those “eggs” are other DC superheroes.
With an expanding roster that already boasts big names like The Flash, Nightwing and Catwoman, Injustice has already covered a good amount of DC’s most notable mainstays. However, from the players’ perspective, its more worthwhile to be concerned with how the game plays, as opposed to who’s in it. If anyone that’s even remotely interested in Injustice spent any time with last year’s excellent Mortal Kombat (or virtually any Mortal Kombat), then you’ll feel right at home.
While checking out the game at this year’s New York Comic Con, it became pretty clear that Warner Bros., DC, and Netherrealm Studios make a great team – even if this is their second time together. Worlds collided before in Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe, which was a good game, but, for a handful of reasons, it wasn’t great. Whether it was the blending of the two decidedly different universes, or the juxtaposition of fatalities versus brutalities, MK vs. DC had its share of issues. Now, having expertly rebooted Mortal Kombat, Netherrealm are turning their attention to the DC stars from that game, and finally doing them justice.
On the floor at NYCC, the public got to get their hands on some of the already playable characters that have been on display since E3 (Superman, Bats, Solomon Grundy, etc.), as well as a couple newcomers to this latest build, specifically Green Arrow and Catwoman. While all of the characters use the same controls, and even combos for special moves (down, forward, punch), each entrant feels unique, with the Green Arrow (obviously) being a projectile based-character, and Catwoman being more of a speed-based attacker. Arrow comes packing an assortment of different arrows in his quiver (think freeze and electrocute), that you can fire depending on how your attack is executed. Selina Kyle on the other hand, used her claws an whip to scratch and claw her way to victory.
Green Arrow and Catwoman won’t be the last characters to make the game, there’s still quite a bit of space to expand the roster. When asked if the character select screen was final, in that it showcased 24 potential characters, a Netherrelm rep told us that they wouldn’t confirm the final number, but it would be somewhere in that range, citing that any more than that and the fight styles become too similar. He also noted that it takes about six weeks for each character to be added to the game, meaning that the studio needs to account for that time as part of their development schedule, so they can really only add so many characters.
When questioned about the two most recently announced characters, Green Lantern and The Joker, the rep was tight-lipped, specifically when asked about The Joker’s super moves. While it may be only one small aspect of a much bigger game, there’s something really appealing about the options that The Joker presents, so much so, that Warner Bros. thinks that it is interesting enough to hold back as its own announcement sometime before the game releases.
Injustice is stacking up to be a solid fighter with some interesting ideas included. The epic names associated with some of the biggest superheroes ever created makes it feel like Injustice may be too good to be true. With the quality execution of Mortal Kombat setting the stage, Injustice may be a worthy successor, with fans of both MK and DC finding something they may like when the game hits stores next April.
