It’s just a given that we live in an age when hackers want to get their grubby virtual mitts on your online data–that’s just the world we’re living in now. But ArenaNet, who suffered somewhere between a reported 8500 and 11,000 Guild Wars 2 account hacks might want to think twice about leveling the blame at paying customers of their fresh out the gate MMO.
While the actual extent of the hack is in question (ArenaNet is saying it’s closer to the smaller number of 8500 subscribers to the recently-launched MMO and Edge is reporting the 11,000 number), the developer laying the blame at weak passwords and unoriginal usernames. Undoubtedly, they’re right to some extent–some users out there have probably chosen some weaksauce logins that can easily fall prey to a dedicated hacker willing to brute force their way into someone’s account. But this is the part from the game’s Wiki that gives me pause:
“Hackers have lists of email addresses and passwords stolen from other games and web sites, and collected through spyware, and are systematically testing Guild Wars 2 looking for matching accounts.”
That’s kind of the equivalent of saying that ArenaNet knows that someone’s constantly trying to break into your house–they can see them! So you should really lock your doors better, or something.
I’m oversimplifying, of course, but so is ArenaNet to a certain extent. When accounts are being exploited in the thousands like this within two weeks of release, is it at all possible that maybe they should consider multiple authentication factors beyond their single factor email method?
