PAX Prime 2012: Fans Celebrate 20 Years of Kirby With Chewing Gum World Record!

Since debuting in 1992, Kirby has become one of the most recognizable characters in the video game industry. Having appeared in 22 separate titles, across multiple platforms, 2012 marks the 20th Anniversary of Nintendo’s bubbly buddy and fans celebrated this year at PAX Prime by setting a new world record!

On September 1st at PAX Prime in Seattle, Nintendo gathered 536 Kirby fans and set out to accomplish the new Guinness World Records achievement for the most people blowing a chewing gum bubble simultaneously. The previous record was 304 participants, achieved by Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Oct. 27, 2010.

“Kirby is no ordinary character, so it’s not a surprise that his fans would go to extraordinary lengths to mark his 20th anniversary,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Nintendo is proud to have such a dedicated and enthusiastic following. Between this new world record and the upcoming launch of Kirby’s Dream Collection: Special Edition, it’s turning out to be one heck of an anniversary party.”

After being instructed to chew their gum for at least 1-minute and then blow and hold bubbles for at least 30 seconds, Nintendo and loads of PAX Prime attendees made their mark on the record books as only Kirby fans could. Congratulations to everyone who participated!
