Professor Layton Gets Unmasked This October

By Joseph Leray

Yesterday, Nintendo released a new, English-language trailer for Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, the fifth entry in the Level-5—developed puzzle series. The trailer introduces young Herschel Layton’s luscious Afro (and an ostensible long-lost love interest), as well as the new adventure’s presumptive antagonist: a masked and winged gentleman in white tuxedo

The titular mask is (of course) some ancient relic with mystic properties, and our as-yet-unnamed villain has been using it to terrorize the town of Monted’Or, alternately crushing people underneath parade floats or whising them into the air to make them float away. The crushing seems particularly violent for a game mostly based on math puzzles and serving people tea.

The real surprise here, though, is that Phanto, of Super Mario Bros. 2 fame, has made his glorious return! As disembodied faces go, he’s by far the most terrifying. It’s no wonder those villagers are reaching out to Professor Layton and Luke, the world’s oldest apprentice, for help.
Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask will be available for the 3DS onOctober 28, 2013 inNorth America.
