Wikipad Gaming Tablet Specs Revealed

Touch controls make tablet gaming pretty tough to enjoy and a lot gamers won’t even bother giving it shot. However, as tablets become more and more powerful, developers will be able to create more high quality games. Thankfully, one manufacturer sees the potential and is in the process of creating the Wikipad, a powerful Tegra 3 powered tablet accompanied by a console-style controller attachment.

In a recent interview with GamesBeat, the company behind the device (which happens to share the same name) revealed the final specs for the Wikipad and the device looks pretty promising.

First things first, the screen. While the original design, shown off at CES earlier this year, featured a 7-inch screen, the final version cranks things up a bit, coming in with a 10.1-inch IPS display with a 16:10 1,280 x 800 resolution. The tablet itself will measure 8.6mm thick, making it just slightly thicker than the iPad 2. However, the Wikipad sans controller weighs only 560 grams, which is about 40 grams less than the iPad 2.

On the inside the Wikipad will come equipped with NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 T30 1.4GHz quad-core processor with 1GB of DDR2 RAM. It has also been confirmed that the tablet will come with at least 16GB of internal storage, though that number could increase before the Wikipad hits retail. As far as battery life goes, the Wikipad will apparently be capable of delivering 6 hours of continuous gaming, while video playback can last as long as 8 hours.

The unit will ship with the Android 4.1 operating system and the controller unit, which is connected through a proprietary connector on the bottom of the tablet. Like most console controllers it will sport two triggers, two bumpers, four action buttons, along with with start and select buttons. The tablet will also feature a 2-megapixel camera up front and an 8-megapixel shooter on the back.

There is still no firm release date for the tablet, but according to GamesBeat, Wikipad President James Bower says it will release later this year.
