EA and Insomniac Launch 'Outernauts' Facebook RPG

The Ratchet and Clank devs bring critter battling to your social network in the EA-published Outernauts.

Find out more about mixing it up with your friends' monsters after the jump.

The story-based RPG puts you in the role of a member of the Outernaut Force, which battles pirates and evil corporations using alien creatures found around the galaxy. The asynchronous gameplay will have you fighting friends, collecting loot, and traveling to various planets in the Outernauts universe and it's live now in your Facebooks.

The comic sci-fi angle isn't too far afield from Insomniac's usual output which includes Spyro the Dragon and the Ratchet and Clank series. What's significant here is the studios' efforts to branch out beyond console gaming into something with a little more persistence. The social gaming space is pretty thick with other companies vying for gamers' attention, and based on what Insomniac has on display on the game's official page, they're banking on their sense of humor to grab players' attention (albeit toned down from the slightly raunchy vibe of the R&C games).

You can check out Outernauts on its game page (note: Facebook membership required).
