Sam Raimi Leaves the ‘World of Warcraft’

The Spider-Man and Evil Dead director opts for Oz over Azeroth, leaving the 2013 fantasy release without a director.

With no updates on the film since 2010, Crave Online asked the director about the status of the long-in-development adaptation. Raimi’s reply:

Actually, they don’t have me directing World of Warcraft anymore because when I took the Oz job, they had to move on to another director. They had to start making it.

It doesn’t sound like Raimi’s departure was necessarily voluntary, but at the same time, the writer-director was otherwise committed to production on Disney’s Oz the Great and Powerful. That film is due out next March and is currently in post-production, while the Spartacus series he co-created for Starz is entering its final season.

Whether or not the decision to leave WoW was up to Raimi, I wonder if the director wanted to spend another year and change in production for another elaborate fantasy movie with all of the extensive CG work and moving parts that kind of thing demands.
