NetherRealm Developing New DC Comics Fighting Game, “Injustice: Gods Among Us”

Will heroes become villains in the upcoming brawler from the studio behind Mortal Kombat?

Injustice: Gods Among Us is currently in development at NetherRealm Studios with a projected release sometime in 2013 for the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U. The upcoming title is based on the premise “What if our greatest heroes became our greatest threat?” Well, we’ve had decades of comic stories to answer that one and usually it involves some dark side heroes going evil before getting their comeuppance.

If you’ll recall, this is NetherRealm’s second stab at the DCU after 2008’s Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, which saw the heroes and villains of DC dropped into the long-running battle for Earthrealm. Punchy shenanigans ensued. Now, it looks like NetherRealm is doing an alternate universe take on the DCU, setting Injustice “in a world where the lines between good and evil are blurred.” The DCU has in the past had an “Injustice League, comprised of the villains of the comic universe, ostensibly led by Lex Luthor to take down the Justice League, but it sounds like NetherRealm is doing something more like a Crime Society of America story.

The announcement dropped some names that will be making their way into the roster including Batman, Superman, The Flash, and Wonder Woman, along with villains Harley Quinn and Solomon Grundy. It would be a big surprise if the likes of Lex Luthor and the Joker didn’t make their way into the game.

The official site for the the game is live where you can check out armored, gritty versions of The Flash, Superman, and Wonder Woman, and a trailer is expected to be released soon.

Hopefully, we’ll hear more about this one during E3.
