Last year saw the release of two very different takes on the Serious Sam franchise. In one corner, there was Serious Sam Double D, a 2D indie Contra-style shooter by Shoot 1up and Explosionaide developer, Mommy’s Best Games. In the other corner, we had Serious Sam creator, Croteam, launching the most recent chapter in the main series with prequel, Serious Sam 3: BFE (Before First Encounter). Unfortunately, both titles were limited to PC releases, leaving console gamer in the cold. That’s now being remedied as both titles have been announced to come out on XBLA this fall.
Serious Sam Double D’s rerelease will sport an “XXL” at the end of its title, signifying a host of new additions. These include new features, campaign missions, challenges, enemies, weapon upgrades, and a co-op mode.
Founder and lead designer at developer Mommy’s Best Games, Nathan Fouts, explained, “Our fans loved Serious Sam Double D when it launched on PC but some rightly felt that the shooting grew repetitive and the Gunstacker could use more depth… We’ve taken all this to heart and are incorporating more gameplay variety and, of course, adding the biggest fan request—two-player co-op!”
In other Serious Sam news, Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter DLC just went live on Steam.
As someone who prefers playing these sorts of game on consoles, I for one, am seriously excited.
