Sweden-based studio SkyGoblin has announced the commercial remake of their free adventure title, The Journey Down: Episode One, will be released May 18th on Windows, Mac, and Linux for a suggested retail price of $13.99. Android and iOS ports will follow shortly.
The Journey Down is a point-and-click adventure about a couple of down-on-their-luck gas station attendants who get thrown into "a twisting plot of corruption, laughs and brainteasing adventure." It's heavily steeped in African culture, with character designs based on wood carvings and masks from the Makonde and Chokwe tribes. The film noir inspired art direction and abstract character design is reminiscent of Grim Fandango without being derivative, and the whole thing looks exceptionally accomplished.
The commercial release adds a fully voiced cast, HD art and animations, a well as more locations, characters, puzzles, story, and jazz. A full trailer will be released next week, but until then here's a teaser. Meanwhile, the original game is available and absolutely free.
