Shigeru Miyamoto revealed in an interview with Spanish Newspaper El Mundo that he would be showing off a new Pikmin game at this year's E3 (June 5-7). A representative from Nintendo later confirmed this, clarifying that the title would be for Wii U. They added, "He believes that anyone who has played Pikmin games in the past will enjoy playing."
Miyamoto stated that he decided to hold off on a third Pikmin game until the Wii U because he thought the series would be a better fit for a system with high-def graphics.
In less surprising news, Nintendo has also confirmed there will also be a new Mario game for Wii U being shown at E3. It will be based on the Super Mario Bros Mii tech demo that was part of the Wii U's showcase at last year's E3.
The first time Nintendo showed off the 3DS at their E3 2010 press conference, their demo reel contained a 3D panorama of Pikmin characters shrouded by grass, which I firmly remember as the first moment I was truly wowed by the system's lenticular screen. Ever since, I've been holding out for a 3DS Pikmin, but this should do just as well. Plus we're getting a new 3DS Mario game, so I've got no reason to complain.
