‘Mortal Kombat’ (Vita) Preview – Another Second Life

Much has already been said about Warner Bros.’ recent Mortal Kombat reboot, most of which has been very positive. The game brought together the first three MK games in grand fashion, giving the series its first proper release of this console generation, and both fans and critics ate it up. Recently, WB updated the release for consoles with the Komplete Edition, packaging in the original release’s DLC. While “Komplete” may imply that the team at NetherRealm was done with title, they have one more release scheduled for the Vita, and it’s looking like that will officially be the definitive version of the game.

When MK for the Vita hits shelves this May it will include everything that the console releases had, plus a ton of additional content, exclusive to the platform. Everything you would expect is featured right out of the gate is there; the original story mode, challenge tower, crypt, and the best looking version of Mortal Kombat ever released (promised to run at 60 fps on the Vita). Layered on top of that are the goodies that came along with Komplete; all the extra characters and DLC (including PS3 exclusive Kratos and DLC of the Year nominee Freddy Kruger), the additional skins, and fatalities. However, the Vita release goes one step further by offering a host of new in-game content and some novel feature additions that take advantage of the Vita’s unique hardware.

First up is the expansive addition to the gameplay, which includes a new challenge tower, featuring 150 new challenges. One of the biggest differences in the Vita exclusive tower is that many of the challenges were designed for the DLC characters, which the original release couldn’t accommodate, and are tailored for the Vita (think touchscreen integration with specific functionality, i.e. stopping Sector’s missiles with your fingers during a match). Another of the more kooky ways that MK is making use of the Vita’s touchscreen is the new Test Your Slice mode – think what Fruit Ninja would be like if all of the watermelons were replaced with heads and hearts. There is also a Test Your Balance mode that uses the accelerometer by putting your favorite MK characters on a plank above a pit where players need to keep them balanced for as long as possible. The bonus payoff with this mini-game is that there’s a host of new ways to die waiting at the bottom of that pit for players to enjoy.

The list of new stuff goes on to include 16 newly unlockable costumes, as well as a an Easter Egg that will take Mortal Kombat into the real world via the Vita’s rear camera. Of course, the Vita version also features online play (ad hoc and WiFi only), so that you can take your favorite character online and show the world what kind of havoc you can wreak with just your bare hands.

Overall, if you were a fan of the original release, and have a Vita, you’re going to want to keep an eye out for this release. This release would be solid even if it was just the original game, but all of the additional content is a worthy incentive to pick up Mortal Kombat on the Vita, especially since this one looks as good, and runs just as well as its console counterparts.
