'XCOM' Returning To Its Roots With 'Enemy Unknown'

A second XCOM title is being developed by Firaxis games, gets Game Informer cover for February.

When 2K Games announced that they would be making a new XCOM game, fans of the classic PC action-strategy games (like myself) were excited and then almost immediately baffled by the revelation that the franchise's return would be a genre shift: instead of a tense strategy game set in the near future, we'd be getting a 50's-set FPS. It was a curious move and seemed out of step with what made gamers excited about the series—which is to say, tech and resource management and stalking creepy Greys across 1/3rd isometric map.

Well, it looks like by this fall we'll be getting XCOM in both its new FPS incarnation as well as the real-time/action-strategy game XCOM: Enemy Unknown as revealed in a press release from 2K Games. The developer, Firaxis Games, is responsible for the Civilization and Pirates games, so we can rest assured, at least, that the folks at the helm know a little something about strategy games.

Here's the official announcement text:

2K Games announced today that Firaxis Games, the creative team behind the iconic Sid Meier’s Civilization® franchise, is developing XCOM: Enemy Unknown, an action strategy title that is planned for release in fall 2012. XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be instantly recognizable to fans of the original X-COM, while breaking new ground in strategy games for today’s console and Windows PC gamers. With equal emphasis on deep strategy and intense tactical combat, XCOM: Enemy Unknown will place players in control of a secret paramilitary organization called XCOM. As the XCOM commander, players will defend against a terrifying global alien invasion by managing resources, advancing technologies, and overseeing combat strategies and individual unit tactics.

Additionally, Enemy Unknown will be Game Informer's February cover title where the magazine plans to go in-depth with the new game. On their site, the magazine did drop hints that the new game will utilize destructible environments as well as how the game will switch from the real-time strategy view to its combat view.

XCOM will be out for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on March 6th, followed by Enemy Unknown in the fall.
