Official Xbox LIVE App Hits iPhone and iPad

Considering Microsoft has their own mobile operating system they have been trying to draw a customer base toward (Windows Phone 7), I never really expected this to happen — but it finally has. Xbox LIVE users can now access and edit their account on the go with the new My Xbox LIVE app for iOS devices!

As you can imagine, this was an instant download for us as soon as we found out about it and it’s everything we could have hoped for. After you log in using your Live ID (the e-mail and password used to create your Xbox LIVE account) you’re instantly thrown into a very familiar space. The “home” section loads up with the same gaming “spotlight’ we find on our Xbox 360 dashboard and from there we have access to two other tabs – “social” and “games”.

The “Social” tab is where we’ll find our friends list that shows what games our friends are playing and/or the last time they were online, just like it does on our Xbox 360 console. From this section you can also view and edit your profile, view and send messages, edit your avatar (clothes and features), compare games with friends and use the new “beacon” feature.

Beacons let players set a notification of sorts for a particular game or app. For instance, if you plan on wasting the day away playing Modern Warfare 3 you can set a beacon that lets you know when gamers on your friends list want to do the same thing. It’s a great way to get a party together and we look forward to trying it out.

Finally, there’s the “Games” section. Here we find a list of the games we have most recently played and the achievements we’ve unlocked for each. We can even do a search if we can’t find a particular title we know should be on the list.

The My Xbox LIVE app is compatible with iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch and, best of all, it’s completely free. If you’re anything like us and constantly find yourself comparing games, messing with your avatar and chatting with friends via Xbox LIVE head over to iTunes and download the app right now.
