Do you yearn to climb inside 50 tons of humanoid-shaped metal and wield an arsenal of high-tech weaponry? If you’re not already a fan of the MechWarrior series, then you ought to be. Now is the perfect time to give it a shot, with Singapore-based game developer Personae Studios set to launch MechWarrior: Tactical Command on Apple’s iOS platform.
Big mechs will be landing on the iPhone and iPad next year
The announcement, which can be read in full here, was accompanied by a 1-minute trailer (which the screenshot above is pulled from). Judging on the footage, MechWarrior: Tactical Command looks to be fairly far along in its development already, although the release schedule is still a nebulous year-long window. Hit up the YouTube video to get a look for yourself.
Perhaps best known for MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat, a mid-90s PC hit that was one of the era’s best games, the MechWarrior series has a long list of entries with nearly 20 titles spanning from 1989 to 2006. To put the size of this franchise in perspective, that’s not even including MechWarrior’s hobby gaming roots with the BattleTech franchise, plus the eventual comic, cartoon, and other spin-offs.
Although the franchise has had a rocky few years due to the shuffling of split intellectual property rights, BattleTech has been on the rise ever since Catalyst Game Labs began producing tabletop games again (their introductory boxed set made this year’s MTV Geek Gift Guide).
Back on the video game side of things, there’s also a BattleTech MMO, MechWarrior Online, expected to launch next year. To follow the development of this and other BattleTech/MechWarrior-themed games, be sure to hit up the official BattleTech portal at BattleTech.com.
