This coming Spring, Ubisoft is giving Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc an HD update on PSN and XBLA.
In this writer’s humble opinion, Rayman was one of the very few 2D franchises to cleanly make that early leap into 3D at the end of the 90’s and beginning of the last decade. Rayman for the PS1 was one of the finest platformers for Sony’s first console and its 3D sequel, Rayman 2: The Great Escape was one of the finest platformers for the Dreamcast way back when we thought Sega would always be in the hardware business.
Unfortunately, I never got the opportunity to play the third entry in the series, Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc but it sounds like the point where the sweet and charming series began to start winking at audiences, slightly breaking the fourth wall and poking fun at the genre conventions of platformers. Since then, the franchise has been all Rabbids, all the time–until this month’s release of Rayman Origins, at least brought the series back to its 2D roots.
So it’s easy to see why Ubisoft might have wanted to provide Rayman 3 with an HD makeover, given that, at least in terms of tone, it feels like a bridge between the 2D roots of the series and the feel that has presumably been more attractive to the publisher over the last few years. While this update doesn’t have a finalized date or any announced additional content, the press release notes that it’ll include mini-games, achievements, and online leaderboards.
Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc HD is coming to PSN and XBLA in spring of 2012.
