Incredibly, it's been over six years since we last saw the thieving raccoon that is Sly Cooper. Sucker Punch, the developer of the first three "Sly Cooper" games, have since moved on to their popular "inFamous" franchise, which has left a void for those hoping to take Sly out for another stealthy platformer spin. During Sony's E3 press conference this year, it was announced that the franchise would in fact get a fourth game in 2012. "Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time" is being developed by Sanzaru Games.
Sony has released a new trailer, showcasing the main protagonist of "Thieves in Time," an arrogant tiger who goes by the name of El Jefe. Check out the video after the jump.
What's a "Sly Cooper" game without a crazy, anthropomorphic villain? El Jefe will apparently serve as the game's main antagonist, and might I say, has a definite Shere Khan meets Patton thing going on there.
Beyond the tiger boss, the first thing I noticed is that the cutscenes appear to be fully animated. The previous three games relied more on the "animated-comic" type look, but the overall aesthetic of the series has always been very cartoonish – just look at those thick, black lines. From the little bit of actual gameplay that's been shown, I think "Thieves in Time" is holding onto the themes of previous "Sly Cooper" games, while taking advantage of the obvious hardware boost of the PlayStation 3.
It's not entirely surprising that Sanzaru was tapped to helm the fourth game, given their pedigree remastering the original titles to PlayStation 3 for the "Sly Cooper Collection."
