The current console generation has not been kind to Sega's furry, blue mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog. It seems like every time the publisher announces a new adventure for the platforming speedster, fans who have been burned repeatedly by less-than-stellar offerings get their hopes up... only to have those hopes once again dashed. So with that in mind... ratchet those hopes up once again, because hey! There's a new "Sonic" trailer!
The trailer, posted exclusively on Facebook shows absolutely nothing. Seriously. It's a cinematic. There's one moment where it looks like we're about to switch to some classic 2-D gameplay... and then it goes all pre-rendered again. The only possibly revealing element is an appearance from the old-style, out of shape Sonic.
The last game to star Sega's favorite rodent, "Sonic the Hedgehog 4," offered a high-def return to the classic platforming gameplay that first hooked fans so many years ago. The game, the first in an episodic series, received mixed reviews. While the gameplay's old-school found its fans, some took issue with the design of the levels.
"Sonic 4" was also, sadly, the best release in the series since the current console generation kicked off with the launch of the Xbox 360 in 2005. "Sonic the Hedgehog," the 2006 release for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 traded 2-D platforming for a 3-D open world-ish adventure, and it was offensively bad. The decent "Sonic and the Secret Rings" for Wii followed, and that showed some promise, but every game that came after it seemed to only go further offer the rails.
There obviously isn't much to say about this new "Sonic" based on the trailer, but if you've got any thoughts on what we might except, please share them.
